This event has been called the greatest radio promotion in History! It is where you will find the best hot dog in New England. The Hot Dog Safari radio promotion is the brainchild of sports radio legend Eddie Andelman. To appreciate the event, you must know Eddie.
Eddie is outrageous, topical, spontaneous, and has one of the longest running sports talk programs in the country. Over the years, his composite ratings are unparalleled by any others in the field, which begs the question, "Why is Eddie so popular?" The answer: Because he's fun!
Eddie doesn't just talk sports. He talks about Cracker Jacks and Hot Dogs, about picking the winning team and picking the best Chinese Food. Eddie regales his audience with personal anecdotes of well-known figures, and stories about his wife "The Fabulous Judi". In his own words, Eddie "will digress" from time to time with his unique sense of the absurd. Eddie can make the blandest topic a subject of hilarity.
Eddie Andelman is also known for his personal dedication to charities and worthy causes. For several years, Eddie has directed much of his energy to raising funds for the Joey Fund for Cystic Fibrosis. Through his close friends, the O'Donnell family, Eddie witnessed the courageous battle of Joey O'Donnell, who succumbed to the disease at the age of 12.
The idea for the Hot Dog Safari evolved back in 1990 when, during his program, Eddie wondered aloud to his audience about the ultimate sports food: the hot dog. Nominations for the best hot dog were poured in. Heated challenges ensued. Eddie resolved the debate by organizing a bus trip for 200 people to visit different locations to sample various hot dogs. As Eddie told his listeners: "We are on a Hot Dog Safari". With this idea, Eddie found a unique way for sports fans to gather, have fun, test a variety of hot dogs and raise money for charity. The money from ticket sales went to benefit the Joey Fund.
In year two, the Hot Dog Safari grew to an attendance of 3,000 people when it was decided to offer the various hot dogs in a single location. Hot Dog Safaris III and IV yielded progressively higher attendance. Now in its 19th year, attendance at Suffolk Downs should be higher than ever.
Broadcast and advertising trade magazines have often referred to the Hot Dog Safari as one of the biggest and best radio promotions ever developed. At its annual event in 2007, in a single day, the Hot Dog Safari raised over $200,000, all of which was donated to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis; a cure that the medical experts say is only a few years away. We ask that you help to find that cure.
